The Little Fellow Chair By Ditte Maigaard Studio

The Little Fellow Chair is an exploration in unusual materials and innovative ways of upholstering. The designers intention was to create an object that affects people in a profound, unique and personal way, which makes the viewer want to touch and explore the object. The name Little Fellow refers to the similarities to a distinguished little friend.

The frame is covered in thick nautic rope, which makes all surfaces textured and warm, while making the chair appear as if it was ”made entirely of rope”.

This concept is also used in creating the seat pad. Constructed with a traditional brush binding technique, the upholstery of the seat consists of a few centimeter long pieces of rope-ends pulled into a grid of holes in the timber seat. The rope-ends can be exchanged and different colours added to create patterns. This construction allows for client customisation and personality, while it expresses a wonderful tactile sensation.

Ditte Maigaard is a conceptual designer with a passion for surfaces and story telling. She works in the crossfield between graphic design, textiles and furniture design and utilise her knowledge of materials, construction, texture and story telling to make innovative design solutions that explore tradition taken to the edge. She graduated with a MA in design from The Danish Design School in 2010. Also studied at The Design School in Kolding (DK) and has a graphic design education from 2001. PP Blue Rope Chair By Tom Price

This chair is created by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The rope begins to liquify as it comes into contact with the heated former and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope. Fleece Chairs By Tom Price

These chairs are part of a series commissioned by Arts Co for the exhibition, 'From Now to Eternity', and are made exclusively from discarded polyester fleece clothing. The seat area is created by placing layers of polyester clothing onto a hot steel seat-shaped former. As it heats, the fabric begins to melt, exposing and integrating colours and patterns of the various layers. When cooled the surface is transformed into a rigid, shiny, colourful display of dissolved pattern and colour. From Now To Eternity is a celebration of and debate around design, with a focus on one material: plastic. Plastic is with us virtually from now to eternity: impervious to bacteria, acid, salt, rust, breakage and, in some cases, able to withstand heat, plastic is something of a miracle substance. One hundred years ago, when it was first invented, no one could have anticipated that plastic would present one of our biggest recycling challenges. Pioneering arts consultancy Arts Co commissioned eight leading contemporary designers and design collectives to celebrate plastic through their work and look at ways to re-think our growing mountains of discarded waste. The designers in the exhibition show how plastic�s versatility - transparent or opaque, hard or pliant, able to take on a myriad of colours and forms � can serve their creativity.
