A sea urchin shell from the Philippines provided the inspiration this sculptural chair. On this shell the uneven and irregular ordering of the attachment points of the urchin's spines combine to form a strong pattern.
I sought to emulate this patterning on the chair using a combination of turned and carved elements in combination with surface burning and punching, allowing the patterns to grow from irregular but constrained markings.
