MIURA | Barstool By Plank Designed By Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design

The enormous public attention we received for chair_ONE unavoidably led to a certain categorization of my design. We were suddenly identified with the chair's angular/facetted style. Although I do love the its stealth-bomber aesthectic, I felt threatened by the trap of reapeating myself with this successsful formula. A commission from Plank to design a monoblock bar stool in plastic was the perfect opportunity for me to re-invent my vocabulary of shapes. I was keen to move on from the hard edge to a much softer design. The MIURA stool is strongly based on principles of construction. However, its shape was conceived by working in a much more sculptural manner. The complex free-form surfaces were all designed on the computer.

MIURA is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Windowseat Lounge By Mike And Maaike

Where does architecture stop and furniture begin? Suitable for both public and private spaces, the Windowseat Lounge is designed as a comfortable refuge from the hustle and bustle of lobbies, airports or open office environments.

By taking architectural elements (walls and ceiling) and applying them to a chair, we are exploring the idea of sub-architectural space, creating a room-within-a-room complete with its own unique perspective.

Lighting | Phrena Collection By Artecnica Designed By Karl Zhan

Introducing the new table version of the Phrena pendant light from Artecnica.

Thanks to the popularity of the first Phrena light, Artecnica requested a smaller table version. Using the same resiliant Tyvek material and honeycomb structure, this lamp opens to 16" in diameter and comes with the new gold plated wire base. It still packs flat like its older brother, but the Phrena2 can be used as a both a table and a pendant light.
Upon manipulation this perfectly flat light fixture transforms into a beautiful 3-D shade. Created from the “simplicity of opening a book, the pages of this light work together to create perfect symmetry.” Artecnicas use of white tyvek once again creates a glow and adds warmth to any environment. Can be configured for up-lighting or down-lighting distribution.

Modern Rug Design | Roses By Nani Marquina

Roses is born from the constant process of researching handcrafted systems and searching for innovative aesthetics, with the aim of giving a new and surprising look to a product made using traditional methods. The evenly-shaped pieces of felt that characterise this rug give its surface volume and constant movement, inviting it to be touched, caressed, lived. Available in five warm colours, its shades are not uniform but rather filled with nuance and chiaroscuro when you touch it with your hands or walk on it....more

Blanket Design | Deploye By Nanimarquina Designed By Emiliana Design Studio

Déployé experiences with the court as a decorative element, as an alternative to printed or embroidered. The cuts also changes the appearance of the blankets when they are being used.

Alternating, strategically-located geometric cuts merge decoration with functionality in déployé blankets. Made from 100% wool, they are a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional shawls. The cuts in these warm household accessories extend throughout the blanket, showing its embroidery and colour changes. Heads or tails, in red and black or green and black, the first forms a semicircle from which diagonals extend, like a sun on the horizon, while in the second the incisions delineate squares. The design of both gives them great freedom of movement, as well as an impeccable flow.....more

Diamond Chair By Knoll Designed By Harry Bertoia

Design Harry Bertoia, 1952
Welded steel rods, upholstery
Made in USA by Knoll

Harry Bertoia's 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including the exquisite Diamond chair. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the chair's delicate appearance belies its strength and durability. In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them."

A classic, modern design that enhances any environment, Bertoia's Diamond chair remains a fascinating study in bent metal and a fixture of mid-century design. Knoll is the only authorized and licensed manufacturer of the Bertoia Collection which has been in continuous production since 1952.

Tomato Chair By Adelta Designed BY Eero Aarnio

Design Eero Aarnio, 1971.
Fiberglass. Made in Finland by Adelta.

At first sight, the Tomato chair looks complicated, but the second look shows an intelligent combination of 3 circles with same diameter, two of them being armrests, one stretched to a comfortable back, and even a fourth half circle up side down giving the chair a consequent seat. The tomato is much more than a chair, it is a piece of sculpture. To quote Eero Aarnio: "A product idea can come about in many different ways and here is one of them. I realized that Pastil Chair floats and carries the person who sits in it in water but it is very rickety. If there were three items like two great armrests and the back of the chair would be stable, and this is how the idea of the Tomato chair was born. The name reflects its looks: looking at the chair from the front there are two round shapes i.e. two circles like in the word tOmatO."

55" w | 44.5" d | 27.5" h

Aarnio was - and still is - one of the pioneers in using plastic in industrial design. Plastic material set the designers free to create every shape and use every color they wanted. This gave birth to objects oscillating between function and fun - but always fascinating ones.

The finnish designer Eero Aarnio, born in 1932, studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and started in 1962 with his own office as an interior and industrial designer.

Engaged in new ideas of furniture he designed the Ball Chair (or globe chair) already in 1963. It was produced some years later. Material (fibreglass) and shape were complete novelties for that time's furniture industry. The fibreglass ball is build on a metal swiveling base, and upholstered with foam/fibrefill. The original colors were white, red, black and orange.

Blow up bamboo collection by Alessi Designed By Fernando + Humberto Campana

The blow up bamboo collection is a new proposal in different material of the same product in the “blow up” series that the fratelli campana designed for alessi in 2003 made of mirrored stainless steel sticks with a diameter of 5 mm, welded together. The sticks in bamboo are tied together by hand using natural raffia that is soaked in glue, which is also natural.
The drying of the binding provides a collection of raffia that further strengthens the bond. the bamboo that is used is previously smoked for hygienic reasons and in order to dry it out to make it more stable in time. The type of binding and the structure of the pieces resembles the immense framework for building extraordinary technical performances made completely with this type of wood. In respect to the counterparts in steel, other than being resistant are also lighter and give the objects a pleasing flexibility. dimensions:

Fofo Ottoman By SHE Design Studio

FOFO is made entirely of the fabric Between which is developed by SHE
SHE is a scandinavian design studio based in Oslo, Norway. As industrial designers we work with product development, interaction design and graphical design. Our design process involves definition of the task, product research and conceptualization phase before we move on to the finalizing of the chosen concept to prototype the product. During the process we twist and turn the materials possibilities of functional and aesthetical values. When we work we love to experience and test the material to its limits before we start drawing the product. We are Silje Søfting and Eva Marit Tøftum, both industrial designers, designing with the goal to dig deeper than what we first expect a product to be. Our aesthetical approach is to reach for subtle changes and taking use of the material to its fullest.
We love what we do and work hard to fulfil our own requirements that sometimes are more than what is possible and by doing so we can reach innovation.....more

The Little Fellow Chair By Ditte Maigaard Studio

The Little Fellow Chair is an exploration in unusual materials and innovative ways of upholstering. The designers intention was to create an object that affects people in a profound, unique and personal way, which makes the viewer want to touch and explore the object. The name Little Fellow refers to the similarities to a distinguished little friend.

The frame is covered in thick nautic rope, which makes all surfaces textured and warm, while making the chair appear as if it was ”made entirely of rope”.

This concept is also used in creating the seat pad. Constructed with a traditional brush binding technique, the upholstery of the seat consists of a few centimeter long pieces of rope-ends pulled into a grid of holes in the timber seat. The rope-ends can be exchanged and different colours added to create patterns. This construction allows for client customisation and personality, while it expresses a wonderful tactile sensation.

Ditte Maigaard is a conceptual designer with a passion for surfaces and story telling. She works in the crossfield between graphic design, textiles and furniture design and utilise her knowledge of materials, construction, texture and story telling to make innovative design solutions that explore tradition taken to the edge. She graduated with a MA in design from The Danish Design School in 2010. Also studied at The Design School in Kolding (DK) and has a graphic design education from 2001. Since 2006 she has run the company Ditte Maigaard Studio

PP Blue Rope Chair By Tom Price

This chair is created by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The rope begins to liquify as it comes into contact with the heated former and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope. No additional material has been added to make the seat - it is all made from melted rope. This forms part of a series of chairs created using the same technique with different materials....more

Fleece Chairs By Tom Price

These chairs are part of a series commissioned by Arts Co for the exhibition, 'From Now to Eternity', and are made exclusively from discarded polyester fleece clothing. The seat area is created by placing layers of polyester clothing onto a hot steel seat-shaped former. As it heats, the fabric begins to melt, exposing and integrating colours and patterns of the various layers. When cooled the surface is transformed into a rigid, shiny, colourful display of dissolved pattern and colour. From Now To Eternity is a celebration of and debate around design, with a focus on one material: plastic. Plastic is with us virtually from now to eternity: impervious to bacteria, acid, salt, rust, breakage and, in some cases, able to withstand heat, plastic is something of a miracle substance. One hundred years ago, when it was first invented, no one could have anticipated that plastic would present one of our biggest recycling challenges. Pioneering arts consultancy Arts Co commissioned eight leading contemporary designers and design collectives to celebrate plastic through their work and look at ways to re-think our growing mountains of discarded waste. The designers in the exhibition show how plastics versatility - transparent or opaque, hard or pliant, able to take on a myriad of colours and forms can serve their creativity. The designers are Committee, FAT, Hiroko Shiratori, Raw Edges, Rolf Sachs, Stuart Haygarth, Tom Price and Tomoko Azumi....more
